This is truly exciting news, and is yet another example of why Rock Band is truly a far superior product than Guitar Hero.

The opportunities here are boundless. Now music acts can use the exact same authoring tools the developers at Harmonix use to create Rock Band, to author their own songs into the Rock Band, submit them online for peer review, and ultimately have these games show up for purchase in the Rock Band games on Xbox LIVE, Playstation Network and on the Nintendo Wii console.

A year ago, Harmonix hinted they were working on something like this, but they were not going to do anything of the sort until they could do it right. With this system, even completely unknown bands can submit their copyrighted work, for sale and profit on Rock Band. The opportunities for established music acts to reach new audiences is boundless. The opportunities for unknown, underground and even unsigned musical acts to reach a global audience and make a name for themselves, is just as boundless. The opportunity for Rock Band enthusiasts, who have what it takes create good Rock Band tracks, to hire themselves out to do this work for other bands, and get paid for it, is also boundless.

This networks is a pros only network, and the tools they are giving musicians to work with, are professional grade toolsets. The peer review network, will be full of professional, like minded professional musicians. This is not just some toy built into the game just to be toyed around with and then completely forgotten about in a few weeks time. What MTV and Harmonix are offering, is a fully featured professional toolset, similar in use to ProTools, Cubase and Nuendo, backed by a network of professionals, all with the single purpose of aiding professional musical acts to getting their own copyrighted music into Rock Band for profit. You even get to set our own price for your music tracks as well.

To the best of my knowledge, very few (if any) opportunities of this nature have existed for the music community, for well established as well as completely unknowns and anyone in between, to so easily reach a global audience of millions, and profit directly from your efforts, without having to sign a recording contract or jump through and over, the endless hoops and hurdles that many record labels are infamous for putting between musicians and their money.

In a word, this is awesome. And I seriously cannot believe that anything like this, that would democratize the music distribution process directly to an audience of millions, is happening . . . and is happening this summer. The team at Harmonix ever since they created the first Guitar Hero, and later left to create the Rock Band series, has always stated that they were musicians first and foremost. They have done things over the years to reiterate that point. But this one, the creation of the Rock Band Network, and allowing any musician to put their music into Rock Band and profit directly from it without the need of even being a signed act, this one trumps everything.
