@62BOWTIE ""yes we should "rail against progression" when it starts to change the sound and the drive of bluegrass""" WELL, FAIR ENOUGH... BUT WITHOUT PROGRESSION THERE'D BE NO GUITAR AS A MELODY INSTRUMENT... :o) BTW - THANKS FOR THE TIP FOR THE JOHNSON MTN BOYS, THEY'RE REALLY GOOD AND I HADN'T MUCH LISTENED TO THEM BEFORE I SAW YOUR COMMENT :o)
@sboyne1969 haha using a flat was not considered progressive and lester flatts rhythm sucked anyway lol without earl lester wouldn't have went anywhere but my point is yes we should "rail against progression" when it starts to change the sound and the drive of bluegrass. people today play to other musicians not the people! jimmy martin said it the best, It's about the those people, there the ones buyin our records
@62BOWTIE Ha ha! I do know a (little) bit about bluegrass :O) I was just making the point that at one time, using a flatpick **was considered** progressive. Check Mr Flatt's rythym work, all done with a thumb pick. We should'nt rail against progression or we'd never have had the pleasure of Dan Crary's or Clarence White's recordings to listen to.
@sboyne1969 buddy a flat pick for rhythm is progressive? haha wow you really don't no much about bluegrass do ya? rhythm on a guitar should be drivin and pushin but its like the sayin goes if ya can't drive it, park it! sorry not tryin to be an ass but tyminski's rhythm just didn't have any drive to it
Thank you I am just jearning, and this helps a lot!....and you ARE a pretty good teacher, especially for a beginner like me.

Tony Rice credits Jimmy Martin as being one of the greatest rhythm players. And he should know, I'd think. Del McCourey ain't no slouch either.
