This type of ice (in my language called "steel ice"), the first ice cover that comes in the Fall after couple of night with calm weather and around -10C temperature (14F?) is best for skating. Too bad it usually lasts only for couple of days or a week before snow falls and covers the ice making skating impossible.
2" (5cm) thick of this "steelice" can carry a person, 10 to 12cm (2-3") can carry small car.
This clip makes me missing the Falltime and skating on fresh ice on lake...
The crack looks newly opened but I think it has re-froze partly already as there's no water's reflection/glimmering seen when passing by.

would love to have ice like that on the yard... how is that compared to the ice on a rink? never been on a lake ice before. Where is this?
