I thought for this 4th of July, it might be special to explore both Revolutions -- and remember that while one was a success, and we owe our great nation to it, the other included the senseless deaths of Marie Antoinette, her husband, and her innocent children.

  • I love both movies so much! Wonderful video, it really got me ready for the fourth now! It's an awesome day to celebrate being American. Happy July 4th!! *__*

  • @TheRobpattzlover: Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Happy Independence Day! :)

  • Gosh! I was just thinking about the American and French revolutions and their similiarities and differences! Lovely vid!

I haven't read Jefferson's personal thoughts on the executions of the King and Queen, but I do know that he was dismayed by the increasing reports of violence his friend the Marquis de Lafayette sent him, and that another friend Tom Paine, argued for the exile rather than execution of the royal family, and that in later years, Jefferson condemned Robespierre in writing.

  • @LadyNeferankh: I guess we must have been on the same wavelength this week! My mind just kept returning to the disastrous end of the French Revolution and I HAD to put Marie Antoinette into this tribute. So sad.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Jefferson... I imagine he was rather shocked to discover just what the French idea of liberty involved. I need to purchase the rest of his letters -- I own the volume of Adams' correspondence with him, but not the others...

  • Can't stand Miley but I can see why you chose the song. I love how you placed up this video, there aren't many tributes - that I've seen, anyways - that show the Revolutions that change the fate of two powerful countries. One ended with independence and freedom and the other the brutal murder of the innocent and the nobles - though some deserved death just not in that brutal way.

Anyways, thanks again for posting this and I enjoyed it :D

  • @TheVampireLover1901: Glad you could enjoy it in spite of Miley. I figured that might turn some people off, but the song was too perfect to pass up -- and I have to have a beat to work with, and only a handful of songs with the word Liberty in them have much of a beat!

What happened in the French Court ten years after our Revolution was... horrific. I think the worst part is what happened to the royal children!

  • re: Jefferson's view of Marie Antoinette and her husband's death.

Jefferson concluded that the French people were not yet "virtuous" enough to accept a sudden republicanism after so many years of superstition and despotism and that Louis XVI could have been retained as a limited monarch, thus staving off "those enormities which demoralized the nations of the world, and destroyed, and is yet to destroy, millions and millions of its inhabitants."

  • ... when agreement could not be reached as to the wording of the Constitution.)

Where Jefferson and the monarchy are concerned -- initially, he believed our revolution and the French revolution were the same, but I suspect that altered when the bloodbath escalated to the royal family. Given his sensitive nature, I suspect it disappointed and disgusted him very much.

I always enjoy discussion -- so you're not clogging up my comments. =)
