    I prefer Posner's version somehow.

If your relationship has irretrievably broken down then ending it is better than fighting a lost cause but to end it because there seems to be a better offer is not fair if you have kids. I am speaking as a divorcee you did try and had no choice but to get out and this was 2 decades ago. The husband in this film seemed pretty clueless but was a decent bloke and seemed to want the best for his family.

With their 'brief encounter' comes a giddy, sickening kind of love, so strong that when they realise they have too much to lose, the emotional pain of leaving each other is overwhelming (she nearly throws herself in front of a train). You call that happiness? Really the subtext is that you shouldn't abandon your wife/husband and kids for a lover, it's immoral and irresponsible. Quite a conservative message, but I'm sure I'm not the only one that was willing Laura to get on the train with Alec.

I think he 'knew' something was wrong but not the depth of his wife's love for this other man. I've been watching this film now for more years than I can remember and I still can't be sure about it, but perhaps that's the beauty of it, leaving the viewer to ponder.

That wasn't the message exactly. The point of the film was that no matter how 'in love' they were, it would be wrong to ruin so many lives just so they can be happy together.

I dont like the message. That our happiness can come in a magical encounter with another. They barely knew each other.

I was born in the 80s, but i think everything seemed better looking back in the old days. The beautiful furniture and architecture, the lack of technology, the manners, family values, the romance and mystique, the ability to drink responsibly, the lack of political correctness, and people with a sense of personal responsibility. what do we have now?!
