That's not affection, that's called tasting your prey to see if they need more seasoning. What you didn't see after this, is scratch going to the kitchen and returning with a bottle of seasoning salt.

Its not dominance, its familiarity- grooming shows affection and well-being, (cats that aren't groomed are in serious psychological distress). Grooming another cat, (or lesser critter, like people), shows affection & affiliation- likewise, when you pet a cat, its like you're licking them.
