Merrow, the education reporter for PBS' NewsHour, documentary producer and author of "The Influence of Teachers: Reflections on Teaching and Leadership" discusses Michelle Rhee, school-based performance pay and unwarranted criticisms of teachers in an interview with Kathryn Baron of Thoughts on Public Education, TOP-Ed. He also gives his top two priorities for fixing schools.
I am sorry that when Mr. Merrow talked about social networking, he used the examples of a 14-year old texting a pedophile, and cyber-bullying. As a newly credentialed English teacher with high-tech background, it saddens me to see how educators shy away from the brilliant opportunities of high tech, which goes way beyond social networking. It's also not all that hard for schools to manage their students' use. When teachers embrace high tech, this might aid the profession becoming more respected.

Mr. Merrow,
As a teacher, I have to agree with you on the fact that teachers are most definitely undervalued. It is not a question about "good teachers" or "bad teachers". It is about, like you mention, making the job better. The fact of the matter is that it is a true power struggle. This power struggle will always be a consistent problem. I feel honored that someone as respected as yourself, actually takes the time to support us teachers. Truth is nobody knows what teachers endure day in/out.
