On the 40th anniversary of this wonderful record (Nov. 8, 1970), here is the CBS feed from Tom Dempsey's 63-yard field goal to give the Saints a 19-17 win over the Lions at Tulane Stadium. Don Criqui with the call.

  • Do you have any more of this game?

  • Compared to Gus Johnson, Criqui's call was rather low-key.

  • @cochranexyz You are right...lol. And then he goes nuts on the call when Dempsy made it.

  • There are several kickers in the league today who could break the record. Janikowski, Prater (especially playing in Denver), and Carpenter in Miami all have 65-yard range. Dempsey did it first though, and it took the league a long time to catch up.

  • he only had half of a foot.

  • @scatman44 If you listen to the full audio, there was some doubt whether he was in bounds. Great catch for sure, but it does look like he only got 1 foot in. I was a huge LIons' fan then, 9 years old, and was devastated when this happened. But watching it again, it's a great sports moment. Criqui's call is fantastic. Imagine it being Joe Buck.....

  • You can hear Don Criqui kind of laugh when he announces that he's trying a 63 yard field goal at :48.

  • so awesome!!

  • That was a heck of a catch by Al Dodd on one of Billy Kilmer's patented wounded duck passes to set up the FG attempt.

  • These two teams met just the other day in a playoff game, no long fg's just Drew Brees and the saints getting it done.
