  • I ordered a XO laptop for Christmas and To view the stuff you wright go into the journal and click on the wright activity and then click on resume to view and edit what you Wright

    P.S: Love the video

  • thanks for the tip! and glad you liked the video - did you like how we were too dumb to put in the battery at first? i love making fun of myself!

  • thanks for the video - just ordered one (well, two) and was curious about whether or not we might actually use it. I think we will! As far as keyboard- you can attach a USB standard size keyboard. WPA support supposedly will come in 2008, but there also was a recent update (not final) that apparently works pretty well. Also, you can add an SD card for extra storage. Looks like you're having fun. Can't wait for ours! Thanks for the preview

  • What a great idea to use an external keyboard, never thought of that. I did end up doing the WPA hack that LobsterSundew suggested, it was a piece of cake. After running the script I did have to change the channel on my access point but from then on it works great. Let us know when you get yours - post some comments here - I look forward to hearing your impressions.

  • Is this guy gay?

  • Nice review, but that saying "it isn't for here, it's for third world countries" is kinda demeaning towards third world countries and completely misses the point of this great concept. Of course you cannot compare this device with the laptops we use, but the XO laptop is made so third world countries don't have to feel anymore like they're far far away from the technology we take for granted.

  • actually I found out that it saves in the journal, and you can open it if you scroll and look for what you want to open, you click it, then go over to resume in the upper right hand corner, then click what you want to resume.Since I saved a pippy file I would say resume Pippy.

  • thanks - I'll definitely check that out - I'm not afraid of ugly! That's pretty interesting about the input devices, I hadn't thought of that. Maybe seismic measurements would be helpful.

I get what you're saying about the Journal, but not a very practical way of finding files maybe the child created 3 months ago because it logs EVERYTHING the child does. I need to study this more... thanks again for the comments.

  • WPA settings can manually be done with the XO via a script off the official wiki, but it is not a pretty process yet. In the future there will likely be proper support when someone in the open-source community gets around to it.

  • The analog port that works as the microphone port can be used as a data logger input. You could use that port to attach a pH reader, photogate, force sensor, etc. and use the Measure activity for class science projects.

The Journal is an alternative way of managing files (Rather than drives and folders like a traditional office OS) with a chronological approach. As well, in principle it could act like a report card about the child's progress.
