I believe that the song is about emerging from the depths of despair caused by a failed relationship, the golden ring being an allusion to an engagement or wedding band, that as he moves closer to that person, away from his family, and into misery in his search for that golden ring, he finally strikes bottom, only then gazing upwards, the sunlight shattering along the water, radiating possibilities, seeing the wealth of opportunities and possibilities apart from the misery he now suffers.

while what the dude said could be true, that is an extremely literal way of reading the song.

i like to think of it in more metaphorical terms. for instance, the man has dived into the depths of the river after the golden ring (which represents material goods, for me. it could just be something unattainable but alluring) but his family drags him out as he sees the true value of nature, as the sun splits into millions of golden rings when it hits the river.

I always thought this song was written from a drowned person as he's dragged up from the water, with his family watching on, after trying to dive to the bottom to get a gold ring. He's thanking the rescue person for making him a rock bottom riser as his body is returned to his family.
