Welles' version was chopped up until audiences stopped making fun of it. Wise, the editor, attributed the films failure to timing, a change in peoples sensitivities after the start of the war.

idealforcleaning - what is the ending of the version, if not happy, do you have? According to everything I have read, the deleted footage was destroyed. A longer version including deleted footage was never ever released. The reason for the butchering of the film was, after the war broke out, screening audiences razzed and laughed at how these people (Ambersons) took themselves so seriously. Ambersons, as Welles imagined it, was to be 131 minute Epic.

The version of this film I have is much longer and doesn't have a happy ending. My father had thousands of 35mm films and one of them is The Magnificent Ambersons. I remember he told me that he'd got it from a sale of film stock in Brazil in the early 1960's. The version I have is much better than the one on TV I've seen. They should release the longer version on DVD.

This is a great scene, but actually Welles' original scene was even greater: he made it in one shot.
