i find it funny that whenever someone new/young covers a song, everyone goes "the original is always the best", but when someone older covers it (like Johnny Cash), everyone says that both versions are great.

i dont think that this has anything to do with the age. if someone new/young covers a song, i think its because they dont have enough songs or the want some of the fame of the song. but johnny not only simply covered this sing, he made his own interpretation, because in a way they are completly different and i think because of that are both great versions

Well, Johnny Cash covered it, not copied it. The difference being that he took the lyrics and melody and carved it into an object with completely different meaning. Personally, I connect more with NIN's version which shows more of the desperate, pleading, guilt-filled, self-hate. Cash's being somewhat celebratory, reminiscent and thoughtful acceptance.

so your telling me the ORIGINAL artist knows the songs message better than the person who covered it, omg tell me more blatantly obvious things and if you haven't truly watched johnny cash's version then you wouldn't understand he covered the song and used the message as his farewell to music, watch the video it's a farewell video from him basically, it wasn't supposed to be bleak and depressing cash's version was to be somber, remorseful, and in a weird way his expression of happiness for music
