@wimpygal8 Actually, the most current and "unofficial" Chief you see in the video is 1/2 Cherokee...awkward for you. Despite that fact though, Chief was started as a symbol of pride in the history of our state and continues to serve more directly as a demonstration of our pride for our school, through which, we proudly represent Illinois.
Hope the University legal office gets wind of this and goes after them. Seems to me this is a violation of the legal status of the symbol as owned by the university.
God, you people are ignorant! Get over this thinking that the chief is a symbol and not a mascot and that he honors American Indians. A white guy dressed up in an Indian costume is no honor. You'd freak if they sent some guy dressed as the pope out on the field to jump around--omigosh, he's the head of the Catholic church! What a disgrace! What is it that stops you from making the leap to Indian chiefs being the spiritual leader of their tribes?
To clarify the Chief is(was) not a Mascot. He is(was) the Symbol of the University and established to represent the states and the Illinois Confederation's (Illiniwek) history. Also another note Fighting Illini was the nick name established prior to the Chief. It was stated in reference to the Illinoisans who fought in WW1.
Isn't getting rid of the CHIEF a violation of FREEDOM OF SPEECH? I think the Supreme Court needs to take a look at it.
