I thought he was literally a rake...

I thought the song sounded happy. Someone further up said it got all maniacal but I think it's just kinda jamming. The scary one is when his children come back to haunt him and the girl who was drowned start singing and the scary violin starts up. Maybe it's just me but there are a lot more brutal things out there and I think this song does a pretty good job getting the character across. In my head he's a very nasty looking rake.

The Hazards of Love is more-or-less a rock opera where the plot-line is continued and expanded on in all of songs instead of each song having its own separate complete story-line like your average album. So the story/plot = the whole album. I highly recommend listening to the entire thing in correct order if you have the time; it's an awesome story and all of the guest vocalists are amazing (unf, Shara Warden/'s voice <3).

Not at all! That's how I envision him too, smirking at how clever he was to win his "freedom" back even though it came at--what normal people would consider--a ghastly, unthinkable price. It's almost like he's bragging about murdering children. One of the most unsettling things about the song is how calm and upbeat the Rake seems (especially when he sings "alright, alright, alright").
