From Ebay two RadioShack TRC-231. Transmit is working and can be heard on other CB radios, but I cannot hear them back because no matter what squelch I use I get this noise ... anyone know why? Someone thought my base station was over powering the handheld but same thing happens handheld to handheld.

Update: Mine had a bad crystal. After replacing the crystal everything was working.

  • @phr1sk37 Did you ever fix it?

  • @him3zz Yes, it was a bad crystal in my handset. I have 4 of these :p

  • Hey phr1sk37, have you tried a different antenna? Those rubber duckys are not worth anything. Try the telescopic or an external antenna with a run of coax. I have owned a variety of the Radio Shack walkies and have had similar issues and all caused by the antenna.

The best those little rubber antennas can offer is about a half mile. Very limited receive period.

  • @skipshooter782342 Everything works now. I had a bad crystal in the handset. Believe it or not I am still using these. I have a radio in my vehicle but I use these for my friends and attach the antenna to a Little Wilson which has a magnet base to put on top of the roof. Works very well!

  • I just found the same radio shack Trc-231 laying around in my basement so i threw in some new batteries. Now i can hear people talk just fine, But when i try to talk, my buddies say they hear me alittle bit with minor buzzing, then other times just a big fucking squeal. They say i'm dead keying? Not sure if i need to buy a mic? Im not sure what kind if so..

  • If what your friends state is true it is just the mic button that is sticking. Open it up and fix :)

  • i dont get it

  • @nucci888

    True dat dude :)

  • @pokerguy17 yea i hear ya. no problem! youre right about the antenna. a $1 radio with a $100 antenna will ALWAYS beat a $100 radio with a $1 antenna. and those are only good for short convoys anyway. they cant be peaked and/or tuned at all. if youre not afraid of the antenna height on your car, you can always get a wilson 1000! :)

  • @nucci888

Thanks for the information! :) I was just telling richkief that the height of the antenna does matter when it comes to CB and what experience I had with the handheld CB radios. Maybe I should have hooked a longer antenna to my handheld CB eh? lol Nonetheless, thanks again for the insight! :)

  • @richkief it depends whats in between you and the free way.

  • @pokerguy17 a 1/4 wavelength is 9 feet. or 108 inches. those teloscoping antennas have a coil with is just copper wire wound up. if you extend the coil from the antenna it would be equal to 108 inches.

  • @richkief height is might when it comes to radio. ESPECIALLY cb. hence why you see the huge towers with antennas.

  • @mohammeddavis radioshack was pretty legit with all their products back in the day. very few radio products they sell in todays day in age are pretty good. swr meter. scanners. scanner antennas. SOME cb's.

  • @voicesoffear satellites and cellphones run on radio frequencies also. cb is just a very low band. but ALWAYS have a cb handy.

  • @Scarface1894 "deadkey" is keying the mic with out talking. and you cant hook an external mic to these. (correct me if im wrong) your problem seems to be either a bad or dirty solder with one of the pins connecting the mic. or a bad ground with the antenna.
