Porphyria - a tone poem for orchestra
composed by Daniel Hogan

inspired by the poem "Porphyria's Lover" by Robert Browning.

composed between 01st January and 16th April 2011
scored for large orchestra

apologies for it not being audible, but there should be a wind machine at various places from 09:35 to 10:15.

Porphyria is a story of love, possession and death. When Porphyria and her lover realise that they can not be together any more as she is already married, they reflect on the times they shared and the regret they now face. When Porphyria tells her lover of how much she worships him and loves him, her lover kills her so that she dies loving him and only him. After her death, the storm and pain the lover had before Porphyria return, accompanied by memories of their love.

  • @PersonneAnnonime merci pour la genre mots! :)

  • It is amazing, Danny! Really, the only thing i can say right now is: This would sound much better with a real orchestra, the midi are OK, but i think, after listening to this, that your composer skills are much better. Good luck for your new projects!

  • @0707NicePlayer Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! Yes, it would sound a lot better with a real orchestra. The piece I have just finished, called "Rhapsody for Orchestra", actually shall be getting a concert performance with a real orchestra later in the year. Cannot wait! :)

  • I admire this music because it sounds like Mahler . . . but also 19th-century Russian! Fine slide show, too!

I confess that I clicked on this because I thought it was about porphyria, the blood disease.

  • Impressive composition, Daniel. It really reflects all the sadness of the story. Very good use of the orchestra.

  • the following portions are like some kind of conflict or struggle with a lightning storm outside. the cymbals and timpani/bass rolls are like thunder. the chaos there is very appealing. i like the break of light through the clouds. but its too early for it to end, which makes me wonder what is to follow... ah of course, back into minor at 11:10 and the return of the introductory motifs sets it off wonderfully. the dissonant ending sets it all off. great resolution. endings are so fun to make :D

  • i really enjoyed this piece. it seems very tchaikovsky in parts, and i mean that in the best possible way. it has a certain solemnity to it, like an old castle, and it also speaks to me of death and magic. i liked all the crescendos with the sudden stops afterward. theres some insane bass coming in at 6:30. what on earth is it? the sad and serious melodies following compliment the introductory section very well. the louder repetition just after 8:00 is stunning. the majesty is very impressive.

  • @danielhoganmusic i promise i will have a look...By the way, i reponsed to your message, sorry 'cause it took so long..
