Richards was drafted in the 3rd round, 64th overall, by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. He won the Conn Smythe and the Lady Byng Trophies in 2004. He also won the Stanley Cup with the Lightning in 2004. On February 26, 2008 Richards was traded to the Dallas Stars.

@PuckMyLife45 lastly check out richards plus minsu numbers. they are as bad or worse than kovys. he aslo has a history of concussions, is undersized physically and is soft. i should know i lived in dallas for some time and saw the player he was. what did he do there as a free agent signing? no playoffs success at all and only one playoff birth as their captain.

@PuckMyLife45 there are only 24 players going to arbitration.it is an ugly process&out of the 24,4 are rangers.FOUR.1/6th!that means ull be pissing off 4 core players for the sake of a new guy who will further alienate guys who block shots &break their legs for the "good of the team". doubt callahan will ever play that way again after what sather is doing to him. pathetic!!!and yes the devs r a work in progress but 14/16 playoffs,3 cups in last 15 still ring loud to me.rangers one cup in 70 yrs!

@PuckMyLife45 The devs hardly mortgaged their future for kovy. a 50 goals scorer who is similar to but still three times the player gaborik wil ever be. they gave up a 2nd rounder and a choice of which 1st rounder to lose.johnny oduya was replaced by tallinder for app the same salary so youre totally wrong. in fact the rangers have ruined thier core by alienating them taking them to arbitration.callahan is a heart and soul guy-to take him to arb is awful.7mill/yr for richards is not a smart move

@newjerseydev we criticised it because Kov required the devs to trade away 90% of the depth of their team for a "superstar" who's moody and acts like a bitch any time another team scores a goal. devs/leafs suck get over it you dont have good teams and your stanly cup competition teams are in the past. make way for my BLUESHIRTS BITCHEEEEES!

love the way ranger fans criticised kovalchuk cap hit of 6 mill even though theyve signed a player who is even more of a defensive liability and injury prone (misses 10 games a yr reg) who has never had more than 30 or so goals a i yr and is seen as soft as butter by every player who faces him. richards is a decent player no doubt but the bluehsirts wouldve been smarter to sign calahan and dubinsky, sauer n boyle instead of alienatnig all 4 of them at arbitration.not worth pissing off ur core
