Lawrence E. Cohen was honored by the Wilkes University Alumni Association at the annual Alumni Scholarship Dinner on April 29, 2011. Wilkes President Tim Gilmour recognized Larry Cohen for his contributions to the University and the Wilkes-Barre community.
Cohen earned a bachelor's degree in accounting at Wilkes and a master's degree in business and finance from Columbia University. In 1959, he joined Benco Dental, the business founded by his father, Benjamin, in 1930. Under his leadership, the company has grown to become the largest privately owned, full-service dental distributor in the United States. Cohen is semi-retired as chairman of Benco Dental but remains its chief customer advocate. The business is now run by his sons, managing partners Charles and Richard Cohen.
Long active in community and professional organizations, Cohen has been actively involved in the Jewish Community Center and as a board member for both the Visiting Nursing Association and the American Dental Trade Association. He also serves on the board of the Wyoming Valley Jewish Federation and is active in the Dental Trade Alliance, an association of companies that provides dental equipment, supplies, materials, and services to oral health professionals. He is Trustee Emeritus at Wilkes University.
