Aaron Jordon performing the Nat King Cole version of "Smile" live on stage at the Palace Theatre, Manchester, in the CLJ Academy's hit show "One Night Only".

"Smile" is a pop song, originally used as an instrumental theme in the soundtrack for the 1936 Charlie Chaplin movie Modern Times. Chaplin composed the music, while the words were written by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons. In the lyrics, the singer is telling the listener to cheer up and that there is always a bright tomorrow, just as long as they smile. "Smile" has become a popular standard since its original use in Chaplin's film.

The best known version, sung by Nat King Cole, charted in 1954. It was also covered by Cole's daughter, Natalie on her 1991 album, Unforgettable...With Love.

Singer Michael Jackson recorded the song for his 1995 double album HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I. It was planned to be released as the eighth single from the album in 1997 but was canceled days before its release date. Only a few copies from the Netherlands, Germany and South Africa (where the record distribution was started previous to the withdrawal) were saved as the other copies were withdrawn.

Other cover versions Johnny Mathis, Natalie Cole, Michael Bolton, Barbra Streisand, Skeeter Davis, Judy Garland, Diana Ross, The Lettermen, Eric Clapton, Betty Everett and Jerry Butler, Holly Cole, Elvis Costello, Lyle Lovett, Julia Migenes, Steve Howe & Martin Taylor, Dalida, Michael Jackson, Michael Bublé, Maria Friedman, Petula Clark, Djavan, Sun Ra, Robert Downey Jr.,Ray Quinn, Tony Bennett, Janelle Monae, Russell Watson, Josh Groban, Jimmy Durante, Barbi Benton, David Whitfield, Westlife and Nydia Rojas

  • After Michael Jackson's version, yours is the best I've heard. Beautiful song and you have done justice to it!! :D Great job, keep up the great work, it's an amazing talent :)

  • It was ok, There's no inflection, no power, and if you notice nat king cole had a certain "pinache" about his look as well as his tone. To me it may do justice to M.J. but not nat King cole, he was more forcing than feeling the music. Props to be up on the stage and go about it but there's room for improvement.

  • So much right happening here! The magic comes through! You have the gift.

  • jedno z piękniejszych wykonań mojej ulubionej piosenki, brawa wielkie dla wykonawcy

  • I really enjoy his voice. The movements seem very choreographed he needs to feel the song more and have less planned movement. someone also said he looked bored but it looks more like his nerves are making him concentrate then boredom. All in all very good vocals! 8/10 i'd say
