The "National Night Out" is a nationwide event held every year to serve as an anti crime/drug awareness event in communities. The national event is celebrating its 26th anniversary while Dothan is celebrating its 5th.
The program is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness,
Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
Generate support for, and participation in, local anti crime programs;
Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back
Today's program was a family friendly event. Numerous law enforcement agencies along with both public and private sector emergency services agencies participated. Events such as K-9 and SWAT demonstrations were held every 30 minutes. Exhibits filled the Civic Center and local groups providing entertainment on the Civic Center stage. Food was served up by Anne's Oyster Bar with the proceeds going to V.O.C.A.L..
This year's event, which was the largest in its five year history in Dothan was presented by the Dothan Police Department and the Houston - Henry County District Attorney's Office.
