The 26 people that showed up at the Bongo Java After Hours Theatre last night experienced the most intimate show Nashville has seen in years. Julie Lee, accompanied by Aaron Roche, opened with some incredibly emotional songs from her latest album "Will There Be a Morning?" (the title track, based on an Emily Dickenson poem, was one of the highlights of the evening) and added in some old favorites as well. After a "very short 5 minute!" intermission, Julie and Korby performed the wonderful bluegrass gospel song from their viral video, "The Angels Rejoiced Last Night." Then, taking advantage of the rare opportunity with a crowd so up-close-and-personal, Korby warned that he was going to "do the wordy ones" and upped the emotional ante in the room with several older, personal songs that he doesn't often perform. But reassuring more recent fans with a "don't be scared," he proceeded to energize the crowd with some of his newer pop tunes, with the help of Maureen Murphy, Loren Tucker, and Lucas Leigh. High points of the night were the two closers - a Nor'east song Korby wrote based on the story of the last whaling ship (which I wish I had recorded - it was incredibly moving, and the crowd joined in at the end) and this one, in which Korby borrowed Lucas' Nord to play one of his most poignant old songs... which speaks directly to all aspiring stars bound for Nashville, TN.
