A magnitude 6.7 earthquake on November 16, 1983 damaged a section of road in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Luckily, the quake happened before dawn when no traffic was on the road, so no one was hurt. This stunning footage was provided by KHON, who filmed on the ground and from a helicopter. If you have ever hiked along the "Earthquake Trail" in HVNP, right next to the Volcano House, you will be able to recognize many of the features in this video. The Park closed this road permanently (traffic was easily diverted onto an adjacent road), and turned it into a narrow hiking trail instead, after carefully fencing off the dangerous sections.
