This is a detroit diesel engine on a 2007 MCI J4500 Tour Bus. It is a DDEC 14.7 Liter 485 HORSEPOWER, high TORQUE out-put Turbo Diesel Engine, with Jacobs Engine Brake. This particular Engine only has 72,000 miles on it at the time of this filming, in May of 2008.

  • I love the Series 60 engine. It has a lot of power and plus it's a tough engine. Sounds tight!!!

  • Damn right it sounds tight! Thanks "8v71buses"! Coll screen name by the way. -BOGAR!

  • For having "no power" they sure seem to be able to climb Cajon Pass with no problems.

  • Try Series 60....that's what this is.

  • Wait until those fan clutch bushings wear out. They're a pain in the ass to replace. They're pressed in, and are hard to remove. That's part of our OTR inspections. I enjoy working on them a whole lot more than driving

  • @CivSi02 I agree!

  • @DragonTamer2345 But you'll hear opinions from both sides. Take from it what you want. It's always cool to find people who are into diesel engine technology. But like I said, I drive coaches for a living, and I love it. Anyone on here, myself included would be more than glad to answer any question you have. J4500, btw, is an awesome coach.

  • @DragonTamer2345 Idling doesn't support complete fuel combustion, which can leave deposits on the cylinder walls. Coaches have a high idle function, which provides power to run the AC and every other electrical accessory. But what you may hear about idling not being harmful to the environment is flat wrong. Our company programs all of our coaches to shut down after 30 mins of idling to save fuel. Idling is actually illegal in some cities which can carry a heavy fine.

  • @ford427mustang just a few.

  • Just got back from ANOTHER band competition, and had a thought cross my mind... is the AC belt driven on all of the J4500s, and does it hurt them to idle with the AC on for a long time? We sat in the parking lot of the school idle for close to 5 hours (hold up at the competition, and we were there early anyway), and the engine was never turned off, nor was the AC. Is it okay for the engines to idle for long times like that?

  • I love how these things sound at idle. Just got home from a band trip in a J4500 owned by Cline Tours, and that thing sounds nice outside and inside, idle, and moving at 75MPH. Just a low low roar on the inside, and a nice quiet sound on the outside unless you're RIGHT behind the bus. You also can't tell me it has no power... that thing will take off and sink you into the seats!

  • That's one big AC compressor!!!!!!

  • The Detroit Series 60 engine still has a Detroit Diesel 6V92 turbo sounding of that engine, but that Detroit Series 60 engine is louder than the Detroit Diesel 6V92 turbo engine, and a Cummins Diesel engine, cuz Cummins has a quiet engine, and its a clean engine! and always a cleaner quality.

  • An afterthought, it's comforting to know that this DDEC 60 will never know the hell of being a G4500 ;-)
