Israeli Troops move into Gaza

Israel has sent ground forces into the Gaza Strip after a week of air strikes to try to halt rocket attacks by Palestinian militants.

Israeli troops were reported to be engaged in heavy clashes with Hamas fighters in northern Gaza.

Earlier, Israel intensified air and artillery attacks on the territory.

The UN secretary general has called on Israel to halt its ground assault immediately. An emergency meeting of the Security Council is under way.

Witnesses say Israeli military convoys crossed into northern Gaza at four separate points after nightfall on Saturday. They were supported by attack helicopters.

Advancing Israeli tanks were reported to be in battles around Gaza City and the northern towns of Beit Lahiya and Jabaliya, the Afp news agency reported. Hamas fighters replied with mortars and rockets, witnesses said.

Both sides say they have inflicted casualties but there has been no independent confirmation of the claims.

France has strongly criticised the Israeli land campaign. The British Foreign Secretary, David Miliband, said the escalation of the conflict would cause alarm and dismay.

The US said it had told Israel's government that military action must be "mindful of the potential consequences to civilians."

The State Department also said Washington is "deeply concerned about the humanitarian situation" in Gaza, but said in a statement that Hamas holds the people of Gaza hostage.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has appealed for an immediate halt to Israel's ground operation. The security council is meeting in closed session to discuss the escalating crisis.

Beforehand, the Palestinian observer to the UN, Riyad Mansour, called on the council to force an immediate end to Israel's "aggression"

You know what? I don't believe that israil is getting resistance enough, they dont simple have nothing to show to the rest of the world. The whole think is fucking on-sided, israil is much more powerful and attacks the civilians in gaza side. israil has become a powerful country (with USAs support), they have controlled the media for a long time, they still do.

another problem is that all over the world because of antisemitism, the news always show the gaza side being bombard with children bleeding but they won't show why israel attacks ! ! they wont show you the suicide bomber that kill innocent children in the israely side just before... they'll show you only things that will keep the hate against israel !!
