Moot Booxlé LIVE IN THE STUDIO!
I filmed myself recording all the parts to a new composition from my upcoming instrumental record. No editing was done to the parts in post production, except for two punch-ins - one in the bass and one in the Rhodes, which you can see from the video.

The time signatures shift constantly, so I put them up onscreen for those of you who want to follow along at home :)

Instruments played (clockwise from top left): Rhodes Suitcase 73 through National GA920P amp; Synthesizers.com Modular (controlled from the Nord Lead 2x); Yamaha BB450 bass with Thomastik flatwound strings; Nord Lead 2X (also controlling modular synth); DeArmond S73 guitar through AmpliTube 3 (Orange amp model), 1978 Rogers XP-8 drums with 1970 Dyna-Sonic snare, vintage Zildjian A hihats and ride, Paiste Alpha thin crash.

Recorded and mixed in Cubase 4.
Video shot with a Flip Ultra HD camera and edited in Sony Vegas Pro 10.

  • dude you should check out the french band Magma. Never ever have I heard such complex asymmetrical rhythms sound so natural.

  • @DaZeuhlUndazir I'm a huge fan of Magma! (Looks like you are too, from your username!) K.A. and Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh influenced this piece in a big way.

  • Just some creative criticism. I thought it was well done, first of all. The only thing I thought could be improved was the drumming. Not that it was bad or anything, just needed to be more... inspired? emotional? You can tell when a musician is really getting into it and I think he was holding back a bit. Then again, I'm used to hearing drummers like Lenny White and Billy Cobham with music like this, so I might be biased. Overall though, very good!

  • @deerfish3000 Very good criticism. Looking back at it, I find the whole thing to be a bit sloppy, but it was done on the fly basically, with no post-editing at all, except for two punch-ins (see description). Everything was built off of the drum part, which was put down first. It's kinda hard to play "emotionally" when you have no idea what the rest of the tune sounds like. And then again, comparing anybody to Lenny and Billy is...well...they are my drumming idols. Drumming gods! Peace!

  • There's this one thing I don't get about time signatures. Say you're playing 4/4. Which means there are 4 quarter notes per measure. What's a quarter note? How long does it last? How does that work? bpms? How do you count beats?

  • @YoussefFishere it's simple. BPM= beats per minute. listen to a metronome (you can find one online). Set it to 120 BPM, and just count 1,2,3,4 along with it. That's one measure of 4/4. To count 8th notes, you are dividing the quarter notes in half, so you say: 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and. For sixteenth notes, you divide it in half again: 1 e and a 2 e and a 3 e and a 4 e and a. (pronounce the 'a' like 'uh'.) Does that help?

  • reminds me of Japanese fusion stuff like T-Square, especially with the synths at the beginning.

  • metric modulation isn't switching time signatures, it's switching tempo's by taking a different subdivision as your quarter note. but that doesn't matter. what DOES matter is that this one VERY nice sounding performance!

  • YOU'RE LUSCIOUS LOCKS ARE GONE!!! NOOOOOOO

  • kinda sounds like new age caravan

  • This is insane !

  • Fuuck yeah! This is were its at. Really really nice job. Im having a hard time liste to math rock, as it often seems forced and imposed, not letting it work for the music.

  • so much funk!

  • Hey, just wanted to say I think you made this sound great and all the time signatures really flow into one another naturally. Really groovy stuff. I first saw some of your videos back in 2006 on youtube and had somewhat forgotten about your work. I'm glad to find today that you have a bunch of new and amazing tracks.

  • Speechless.. Forever a fan Moot

  • Love it,really reminds me of Weather Report in places...which is good!
