This was improvised from the basic leadsheet - in the usual key of Db. Because it is such a popular solo piano piece (I guess ever since Art Tatum's version(s) were recorded) I tried to cobble together as many different ideas as I could think of as I played. The result is a bit of a mish-mash perhaps, but my idea was to provide a lot of options for those who play this often played jazz standard on piano. For another excellent Youtube version to study, try Alfonso's that is in the same key -

And of course there is the Oscar peterson version also in Db. As with all of my other videos, the video and a midi file recorded at the same time can be downloaded free from my website - http://www.bushgrafts.com/jazz/home.htm and the printable transcription is now on my DVD - details on my website.

  • Another perfect, perfect, egoless musical gem....a total zen experience, this stuff really lightens the load everyday!

Another cool sub is in bar #4 where it normally goes Fmi7 to E dim....

Try: Fmi7 / Emi7 A7 followed in the next meas. by

D Maj7 / Ebmi7 followed by the usual Cmi(b5) F7 then Bbminor. etc...you might have to adjust the mel. a bit on the Emi7 A7 part...it all forshadows the D major bridge section..very cool!

  • And very cool too are your instructional videos radiokid2!

  • Beautiful, as always.

A neat substitution is to replace the Eb minor in bar 6 (or 5, depending on your version), with a DMaj7 followed by a BMaj 7 (that essentially makes the melody note the Maj 7 of each chord). Give it a try!

Thanks for all of your generosity!

  • Thats another good idea to add to the many options. Thanks buckwheatjazz!
