    You have to listen to this song with your emotions, not just with your ears. You'll feel her pain and anguish, etc.. That's what makes this song so great. That's what makes her so great and so universal after decades have passed. The people who "get it" feel it with every fiber of their being. She sings her heart out. That was her greatest strength and unfortunately her downfall. RIP Janis.

    You are spot on with your post. Some people sing with their mouths, others, like Joplin, sings with her heart. It's what turns an otherwise ordinary song into something special.
