James Kalm has on occasions presented what he feels are "historical" exhibitions. But nothing could fit that category more precisely than "Willem de Kooming: a Retrospective at MoMA". Billed as the most complete survey of this heroic artist's career ever presented, this exhibition is a once in a lifetime chance to see its full breadth. Part three features the major shift to abstract landscape that took place from 1956-59 bringing with it grand coloristic brushwork, his departure to live fulltime in the Hamptons, and his concentration of female figures in the landscape. Organized by John Elderfield, Chief Curator Emeritus of Painting and Sculpture.

  • this is really mind blowing..thank you willem and thank you james kalm

  • Great show at the MoMa, really impressive to see in a room close to 500 million or so and be allowed to be close looking at them... I call this the sumumn of civilization. Great moment it was a vital exposition for any artist.

  • Every artist has had a dud. What's good about abstract art you just can paint over it when it's dry.

  • I tried the news paper thing on oil. Well.....it ws a disaster. Why? Patience . You have to let the paint literaly dry then peel the news paper off a week later, minimum. De Kooning ......Did he ever do a dud? I doubt it.

  • There IS a part III. AND a part IV. I'm in heaven. Thank you so so much. Stuck in LA listening to the ads for this on NPR - jealous! Thanks for taking me, James. Better now.

  • James as always; your efforts are greatly appreciated - "I" personally don't connect w/ de Kooning's work - the big thing I feel about his work, is that he seems forever in search of his identity, as he samples different genres - never the less much thanx for your time and consideration

  • That bloody red in Gotham News...
