Last week I was "rebuked" for saying "Amen!" too often and too loudly during our pastor's sermon. Apparently, it embarrassed the person who complained, and they said if I had done it much more they would have gotten up and left the service. I did not know what to say! I was totally dumbfounded! I was not the only one saying "amen," but apparently from the offended person's vantage point, it sounded like I was the only one. To be clear, I was not being unruly. The pastor has told me personally that he appreciates when I say "amen," because it let's him know I'm engaged (awake?) and paying attention. I can't think that I would ever stop saying, "Amen!" when a preacher says something I heartily agree with or am convicted by. It has become a natural reaction for me. It would take extreme effort for me to stop, and I would feel guilty for doing so!

So, as a way of responding to this rebuke, I have made this video presentation using my friend, Jennifer Schwirzer's song, "Can You Say, "Amen?" as the music behind the images. Please let me know what you think about saying, "Amen!" out loud in church. Do you think I should stop?

BTW, here's a link to Jennifer's site if you're interested in obtaining some of her music:

  • Do you know nhojj?

  • @robertantonnyc Can't say that I do. I'll do a search...

  • @guitmartiman He's in the video.

  • @robertantonnyc Oh, I see! No, I didn't know that was him! How funny? It's just a picture I downloaded randomly to go along with the song!

  • @robertantonnyc I watched a few of his videos last night. A PK, a gay Christian singer/songwriter, a talented young man. I can't say I'd spend a lot of time listening to his music because I don't prefer his particular style, but I admire someone who believes in what he's doing. His homosexuality doesn't bother me any more than heterosexual promiscuity. God hates sin because it hurts us, but He loves sinners and wants to free us from that bondage.

  • @robertantonnyc One of my favorite black gospel singers is Wintley Phipps. Do you know him?

  • I deserve eternal seperation from the One who is the source of all good & I deserve the corresponding torment that brings. Therefore, when someone explains how I can get the gift of an eternity spent w/ the one source of all good, the very One who has poured out untold undeserved good gifts on me & every other human, I can't help but to vocalize some expression of appreciation.

  • You can discuss the many-we must look and listen!

  • @guitmartiman I can't say that I do.

  • I think saying Amen when moved to is not a problem, and I do enjoy hearing it occasionally in church when something really profound or moving has been said, however, we have been members of church where some there thought every other sentence deserved an Amen, and it was really distracting. I say in moderation, when moved to, saying "Amen" is a wonderful thing!
