According to Buffalo's website, the integrated USB cable is removable so that you can plug in a longer USB cable. Have you tried doing that rather than using an extension cable? Also, as far as I know Buffalo drives are the only USB powered drives that are over 640 GB, with 1 TB have no noticed any compromises in performance?
