  • I completely agree about the 1.8 non turbo engine. Got one in my father's Octavia. You can feel the fact that it's once was a turbocharged engine. Almost no power at all under 3k revs. It feels lumpy in town, But once you get it on a twisty road, it's fine. And it also has a interesting engine note.

About the consumption- It can average 40.5 mpg on motorway, if driven sensibly, but in city it can get low down to about 24 mpg if you're a keen driver.

  • It probably has more to do with not cooling the turbo down. I hear chipping doesn't smoke the turbo, but using non synthetic oil is death, plus not cooling the turbo down before shutting down.

  • I wanted a B5 S4 but couldnt find one in good shape

  • LOL!

  • I've got a 2001 B5 avant with 114k miles. The oem turbo is on its way out due to being chipped.

  • Cars are smart as it user. If you do all the maintenance on it, it shall last a long time. I have an old Chevy s10 P/U, old Volvo, and a Honda Accord. I don't put cheap stuff in any of them. The front of the Audi A4 catches my eye definitely. I like the old school "Audi quattro" drop a turbo in that you've got a beast or rally car.

  • You talk about japanese cars but all of you drive them in usa on the highways and the wear and tear to the components is lower than in europe, mostly eastern europe. We have a diesel B5 facelift and now it has about 140.000 miles without a problem and the roads here are prety bad.Audis are very realiable cars.If you buy a B5 or a B6 you will not have problems if you drive carefully.Japanese cars have the highest level of reliability but here in europe they don't last like the ones in USA.

  • One of my drummer-friends had a 300ZX and it went all the way to 350,000 miles before it finally gave up. He got a new JDM engine for it, and the older engine ran on a very respectable level compared to the new engine.
