One important thing that you fail to address at all is how to make some right column content show on one or more pages, while not showing on others. How do you control the pages that side bar content will show on?

if you don't have any widgets it automatically selects some defaults widgets for you. to get rid of them, add at least one widget. I haven't tried it, but try just adding a blank text widget if you don't want to have anything in that column.
