some interesting thoughts being expressed here-I have Rhino's definitive 3cd collection of Bacharach and I listen to the 2nd and 3rd disc all the time-the love songs are essential emotion-distillations of places where we've all been at one time or another-play the music on a good sound system and listen to the horns and piano and the wonderful lyrics sung by great vocalists-I never get tired of Burt and Hal and I never have tired of the Beatles-melody works for me everytime
@Domreiter28 Have you ever heard of the "emancipation of dissonance"? Its the theory that our ears slowly become more adjusted to dissonance over generations. Its pretty much proven, in ancient counterpoint the interval of a 7th was considered dissonant, now jazz includes the 7th in every chord. There are many examples like that. Someday music won't be pitch-dependent, and it will still be beautiful to those who live in that time, for its dynamics, orchestration, rhythm, etc.
@kjuyhfklujhkuyf Dissonance is antithetical to the beauty, harmony, order, creativity, freedom, and structure of music. If you go too far and take away the essence, we are no longer talking about the same thing.
@kjuyhfklujhkuyf And its not that these composers lack subtlety, they simply make their music harsh and anti-subtle on purpose; it speaks to them in a different way. There are many examples of musicians who join experimental, wild, improvisation-filled bands and then have a solo career as well, filled with much more subtle pieces of music, some of which might match your taste pretty well. Ever hear of Ryan Adams? (Ryan, not Brian)
@Domreiter28 There are some great musicians now too, just not popular ones. Most Bacharach-era lovers wouldn't be able to groove to it because most of it is particularly punk-influenced. But in my opinion punk, post-punk, and hardcore are just natural steps in the emancipation of dissonance, as was atonal music (although probably performed a bit prematurely) by composers such as Arnold Schoenberg.
