Anne Frank found comfort in looking at the chestnut tree behind the Secret Annex. She often looked at it from the attic window, and she wrote about it in her diary. In this video you see the chestnut tree filmed with the Secret Annex in the background and from the attic window of the Secret Annex.
The video was shot in 1992, when the tree was still healthy. On 23 August 2010 around 13.30 hours the chestnut tree fell down, together with its iron supporting construction. The tree broke off completely at a height of approximately one meter above the ground. Fortunately nobody was injured.
The owner of the fallen Anne Frank Tree decided 8 September that pieces of the tree will be donated to Jewish museums around the world. The Anne Frank House will also receive a section of the tree which will be displayed in the museum in the near future.

Ich finde es schrecklich das dieser fazinierende Baum umgeweht worden ist : (

I've toured the Anne Frank house possibly about 5x's since it's around the corner from a favorite hotel. I usually go towards the quiet of the early evening when there is no line and not full with tourists. It's blissful to see it without the hordes of people and the emotion it brings can be expressed more profoundly. I have looked at the trees and also thought of her looking at the trees. The trees are a good witness to those times. I think.
