This wine from the Salice Salentino which is the boot heal of Italy--it's 80% negro amaro and 20% Malvasia Nera. The Negro Amaro grape in mine opinion is a grape to look out for from Italy--it is a beautifully scented grape that is nearly black as the name suggest--the Italian word 'Negro' means black and the word Amaro comes from the Greek "Maru" which connotes bitterness--however there is no bitterness but bountiful quantities of earthen notes. This wine is lush and gives characteristics of rose petal, blackberry - black plum -and this wine is not showy but a truly complex and sophisticated wine and has a superb dry finish. Other notes are mushroom, orchard in the fall season, ground mace and clove
It's a wine that goes extremely well with food and it's scent is truly magnificent. I predict we will see more Negro Amaro's hit U.S. shelves, restaurants and wine bars. Found this wine at Trader Joes at a bargain price of $4.99.
