Javert's Suicide. At last.

Javert returns to the barricades and hunts Valjean through the sewers, where they have their final confrontation. Marius is dying, and Valjean implores Javert to let him go so he can save the young man's life, giving his word that he will return to Javert for his arrest.

Strangely overcome, Javert relents, but when Valjean returns, the Chief Inspector is gone. His entire world is thrown into upheaval, at this event that is shattering his convictions.

In this incredible song, he moves from bewilderment to anger, contemplation, turmoil, and finally, despair. Faced with unconditional love, shown from a "criminal" who he believes is the scum of the earth, Javert realizes that his world is no longer black and white. He was so certain of what was right and wrong, so when facing the fact that his beliefs must change - that he was living his life wrong. But he cannot accept losing everything he believed in.

Valjean is legally a criminal, but has spared Javert's life when he could have taken it. How can Javert arrest him now? How can a convict show mercy like this? How is Javert to react now, to this contradiction of the Law? Caught between his iron, relentless duty to the law, and by the mercy of a convict, in despair Javert takes the only way out he knows: death.

Here at the climax, you will notice that "Javert's Suicide" and "Valjean's Soliloquy" are the same anthem.
The two greatest rivals in literature share the same tune. Both are shaken by a crucial devastation that destroys what they thought they believed.
Yet while one chooses life, the other chooses death.

NOTES:
- Sieglinde84 has been waiting what - 2 years for this? LOL Thank you for being so patient! I hope this video does Philip Quast's AMAZING performance justice. o.o

- It was really hard to make the Witchking look sympathetic to this. And it was crucial to flow with the ever-changing emotions in the song --- he goes through 5, at least! The chaotic whirl of his distress had a sort of rhythm in it, which I tried to match.

- I'm very sad now. The last song of Javert.

  • Amazing. This is absolutely amazing. I mean - who, besides you, could make the WitchKing look sympathetic AND make him appear to be stepping down into the wate? (Yeah I thought that clip was really cool...)

Alas, poor Javert! =( I love the part when the song changed at 1:38. Beautiful violins in the background - lovely. Oh, and I loved how all the clips you chose for that part were "softer" somehow than the previous aggressiveness.

  • *purr* Oh God I love this! Two of my favorite things Les Mes and LOTR

  • This was hilarious! I loved every second of it, and I will not watch Lord of the Rings the same again!

  • This is one of the best videos on YouTube!! I think you justice to both LOTR and Les Miserables!! Makes the song feel even more epic :) Well done.

  • only Javert is enough of a badass to have an upbeat suicide song

  • nice...^_^that was cool

  • i think it should have shown the flaming guy falling from the tower

  • This vid is incredible! Well done!

  • Nice roles Aragorn as Valjean and The Lord of the Nazgul as Javert

  • You have no idea how happy this made me. This is like my favorite song from Les Mis, and I've been waiting eagerly for you to do it, and now you did, and it's a million times better than I expected, which is saying a lot, because having seen your other stuff, I expected awesome--but this was even m ore than that! I ADORED it, what genius editing and effects, this was just brilliant. Thank you!

  • uh. no. sorry but this was kind of crappy...nothing was done well at all here, with the clip swapping and matching the lyrics to what aragorn was saying or how the witch king was moving...
