An adult male Plain-capped Starthroat visits the Paton yard in Patagonia, Arizona on September 10, 2010. These large, long-billed hummingbirds are rare visitors to Arizona from western Mexico, usually arriving around the beginning of the late summer "monsoon." This is the fourth rarest of Arizona's 18 recorded hummingbird species.
The long bill, prominent white "mustache" and eye stripe, white stripe down the back, and silky white flank tufts are identifying characteristics for this species. The species gets its name from gaudier tropical relatives that have a "star" of contrasting color in the center of the iridescent throat patch (gorget).
