When I moved to Kansas in2008, mother worried so much that she decided to come to Kansas for a visit.
Many people think Kansas has nothing but tornadoes, but truthfully, Kansas has many things to be proud of, for one thing, Kansas people are very friendly; they love to watch Fox News, and many believe Obama is not a US citizen.
Mother was 71 years old and like most people of her generation, she didn't have any education all her life.
American visa officers were very nice and gladly gave her visiting visa after asking her 3 questions: 1) Are you a computer hacker? 2) Do you plan to get a job in USA? 3) Do you intend to "export" any high-tech secrets for Chinese government?
For this visit, mother prepared diligently. She learnt some English and she even chose an English name for herself: Luise, a name after Luise Rainer, who played "Olan" in the movie "The Good Earth".
Now let's take a look at the long trip from her village to my home in Kansas
My brother took mom to a bus stop. It took him and his little donkey one hour.
·Then One and a half hours from the bus stop to a train station
·Ten hours to Beijing. 13 hours waiting for a flight to Shanghai.
3 hours to Shanghai, it took another 3 hours to transfer to a plane to San Francisco.
·18-hour flight over the Pacific Ocean. At San Francisco airport, Mom told American customs officials she is not a terrorist, they welcome her to the United States of America.
·Then 3 and a half hours to Dallas, Texas.
· Plus 2 hours from Dallas to Kansas City
· I picked her up and drove 4 hours to her destination: home.
For this long trip, Mom used 2 days and 3 nights and travelled for over 13,000 miles.
Two days after we got home in Kansas, we went to Walmart for shopping. Mother was very excited because it was her first time to see the REAL America.
Inside Walmart, she was fascinated by everything she saw.
"I will buy some American products and bring back to China!" she said in Chinese.
"But, Mama," I said, "almost everything you saw are made in China."
"A?" She didn't believe me. I showed her the labels. She recognized the English word "China". She said, "Qi!", which means "no good!" and was disappointed.
We also went to other shopping centers. This time mother carefully checked each label in her hand, and put it back whenever she recognized the word: "China".
But sometimes, she was happy and said, "I found something made in America!"
I checked labels, "This one is made in Taiwan, and that one is made in Hongkong, this one is from Thailand..."
"Qi!" she said, "Son, is there anything made in America?"
"Anything made in America? Good question." I thought it over and I got an idea. I think Mom will love it.
I took her to McDonalds.
I ordered two Big Macs for us. She was very happy; until she got her first bite. "Qi! Big Mac tastes much better in Beijing, son!"
I enjoyed your video Sunny! your mother sounds like a lovely woman. It is a very cute story. I liked the sound that she makes when she doesn't like something. I also enjoyed how she thought the McDonald's is better in Beijing than in Kansas. And how she came here to buy American made things only to find out China makes most things sold in America. It is wonderful that you are a Christian. Please pray that China will send more missionaries to America.
God bless you & your family.
