Barbara Frittoli & Sir Charles Mackerras

ELETTRA

Oh smania! oh furie...
Oh disperata Elettra!
Vedrò Idamante alla rivale in braccio?
Ah no; il germano Oreste
Ne' cupi abissi io vuo' seguir.
Or or compagna
M'avrai là nell'inferno
A sempiterni guai, al pianto eterno.

D'Oreste, d'Aiace
Ho in seno i tormenti,
D'Aletto la face
Già morte mi dà.

Squarciatemi il cuore
Ceraste, serpenti,
O un ferro il dolore
in me finirà.

ELECTRA
O madness! Ye furies ...
Despairing Electra.
Must I see Idamante in my rival's arms?
Ah no, let me follow
my brother Orestes into the hollow abyss.
Now you will have me
for companion in Hades,
in eternal woe, in endless lamenting.

Within my breast I feel
the torments of Orestes and of Ajax;
Alecto's torch
brings me death.

Tear out my heart,
you horned serpents,
or a sword
shall end my pain.

  • I like her...but the version I posted by Carol Vaness is much better :)

  • I have to agree with Orff, Frittoli is the best I've heard.

  • Try Moser.

  • At last I can hear Mozart sang in perfect Italian, and excellent technique, but the interpretation is so cold, perfection waisted.

  • I must say that as nice as this is, it is ultimately a voice better suited to Ilia and not Elettra.

  • And the text posted for the recit and the text she sings are not the same.

I personally like the traditional text better.

By the way, you guys heard Sylvia Sass in this piece? She is amazing!

  • for me it's too fast and not energetic enough!!!

  • I must agree with 'hillevifan' Varness' interpretation is by far the best. One could, of course, do worse than Frittoli but the excessive vibrato, mrlammermoor spotted as well, which is usually resorted to to convey rage I've never found either satisfying or accurate for this kind of emotion.

  • a typical Frittoli: well sung with a tad too much vibrato, but you get the impression you are at a voice lesson where she tries to sing all the notes as good as possible but not the tinniest bit of character or expression.
