  • Cameron must have been absolutely gutted, he really should have walked it via a comfortable majority at least or maybe a landslide considering he had so much in his favour, Labour Party in turmoil, Brown, enough said, most of the press on his side. So anybody feel free to add your own answers to this question, why did Cameron not win an outright majority?

  • @ephabouyed The country wasn't fussed on him and the country still doesn't trust the Tories enough after 79-97

  • @ToManyPhones You mean modernize the economy, cut taxes, balance the budget, make sure unions don't control the government, make Britain proud on the world stage, get a rebate from Europe, keep the defense of the realm strong and limit the power of the state in favour of individual freedoms? Quite cynical for Britain to be weary of the Tories, at least from the perspective of a huge Canadian Thatcher fan.

  • @Cnd1867 The Thatcher government always faced opposition from the left, it really turned for the Tories when things went badly over poll tax in 1990, and then the Currency Mechanism in 1992 - that's what killed them. People still remember how difficult life was the Tories of old - Thatcher and Major. The 97-10 Labour government wasn't perfect, but people were better off in 2010 than they were in 97 and the electorate knew that. They weren't willing to put all their eggs back in the Tory basket.

  • Excellent intro although I do miss Arthur. Exit poll as in 2005 was spot on. As always the Beeb are the masters of election night coverage

  • Cnd1837 I find it utterly amazing that you, as a Canadian, believe that you know more about British Politics than most of the people commenting on this. They lived through Thatcher, you didn't. And how dare you say that you'd rather have an Etonian any day! If you must know, the highest ever scoring degree at Oxbridge was obtained by a state school gentleman from Liverpool: Harold Wilson...!

And look now, today, the UK has borrowed over £1 trillion. The current Tories are totally out of touch

  • go gordon brown!!!

  • @ToManyPhones

people in Birmingham did not like the Tories. that was the seat the tory's needed to take

  • I'd like the previous opening theme

  • @TheRacketBoss Interest rates which were eventually lowered, 3,000,000 was the peak, Britain recovered once the private sector got back into gear which provided modern, tech-oriented positions. How's that wealth gap doing after 13 years of labour? Youth unemployment is at a record high, the deficit and debt are out of control, how's that for a gift to future generations? Yep, people hated her, that's why she was elected 3 times...Gimme Eton over some run-down public school anyday.

  • @Cnd1867 also 15% interest rates, 3,000,000 unemployed, widened the wealth gap, smashed britains industry and forced right wing policies which hurt many people and their families, ("they know the price of everything and the value of nothing" - Nye Bevan), people hated thatcher and speaking as a labour supporter people hate the tories, especially the north who were most affected, you might want to be governed by some stuck up rich toffs who all went to Eton... but not me.

  • @ephabouyed i don't know why i mean you got Clegg who is a "B******ter" and Brown who is a lier David Cameron is the only one we can trust
