Here are a few statistics about my breasts since I started breastfeeding:
My nipples are almost 2 inches in circumference and a half inch high. The best example I can give is an AA size battery, but obviously not as long;
I can't go more than two hours without breastfeeding my baby or my breasts get swollen and become extremely painful and rock-hard. My nipples also will leak breast milk and has done so just a few days ago while I was at the mall;
In this video I am wearing a 36-GG cup maternity bra and the cups are still tight on me. This past week I was fitted for a maternity bra and now I wear a 36-HH cup comfortably. The only down side to this is that the 36HH bra cost me $89.00USD each and I wanted to have more than one;
My lactating breasts now weigh a bit over 3.7kg each and for my American friends, that is about 8.25lbs each breast; and
When I use my breast pump, I can produce just over 11oz or 325ml of milk in a 4 hour period from each breast, which is a total of 22oz or 650ml of breast milk. I should be making well over 16oz from each breast by Christmas.
Nearly all nursing mothers worry at one time or another about whether their babies are getting enough breast milk. The first thing to determine is whether your supply is really low or not. If you are unable to produce enough milk or your baby is not getting enough for his or her age, there are a few things you can do to increase breast milk production.
Here are a few things that worked for me, not that I ever had a problem with my breast milk production, I just wanted to make more than I needed so I could save it and freeze it for a later date. The following are just a few ways to increase breast milk production:
1. Pump or breastfeed more frequently. If you are exclusively breastfeeding your baby, you should try using a breast pump and pump for five to ten minutes after each nursing session;
2. You can also try adding a pumping session or two to your routine during the day to boost your supply, such as first thing in the morning or while your baby sleeps or naps. I use a hospital-grade pump and I have been told they work the best, especially if you are exclusively pumping;
3. Drink plenty of fluids and keep track of how much water you're drinking during the day;
4. Try drinking a glass of water every time your baby nurses to ensure that you're drinking enough;
5. Rest and relax, as it can be difficult to get much rest with a newborn. Make an effort to take care of yourself and rest when you can and try to get as much sleep as you can;
6. Eat oatmeal, as I have been adding oatmeal to my diet and it has increase my milk supply. Steel-cut oatmeal is the most effective (available at most health stores). Have a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast or snack on oatmeal-granola during the day;
7. Mother's milk tea & Fenugreek will increasing your breast milk supply. I tried Motherlove fenugreek organic herbal remedy and did it ever work! It worked too good, so I stopped. You need to take this 3 times a day and for about 5 days before you will notice any increase milk flow. Make sure you consult with your doctor before taking any herbal remedies. I was a bad girl and did not, but I stopped caused I never needed the stuff to begin with.
