yes it was the heat exchanger on number 1 cylinder was completely blocked. swapped it out and it ran perfect...

it sounds like a weak valve possibly a burnt one not sure but did you find the problem since 2007?

why hasn't anyone mentioned timing. YOUR IGNITION TIMING IS COMPLETELY WRONG. the spark is happening too early, causing the air/fuel mixture to ignite while the intake valve (which leads back thru the carburetor) to EXPLODE!!! BOOOOOOOOOMM!!! or just 'pop'. xD

im having the same problem with my vw...its a dual kadron 1641 and it is popping like this car...and it wont idle...do u have any suggestions?

Well no one has been right so far... It was a completely blocked heat exchanger.
