This ballad was composed as a"Tribute" to all former residents of the "Princes' Islands" who decades ago were obligated to leave the country. With their departure, the historical mosaic of several ethnic cultures faded. The composer has tried to express his feelings and yearning for that common culture, with the rhythm reflecting the consequent sorrow and regrets; sometimes, emphasizing the desperate galloping of horses pulling the phaetons.

The sequence of the slides in this video, carefully synchronized with the music, tells a story:

People come to the islands in boats, excitedly followed by lovely seagulls...
Mosques, churches and synagogues are scattered peacefully side by side...
Yet, there is a deep yearning for the common culture lost in the darkness of history...
In time, however, seasons change, Autumn comes, the sea and the weather roughen...
Then people go back in emptiness, with only a sad farewell from the lonesome seagulls...

The composer also wrote the lyrics for this ballad (C) 2010

Belki seni geri getirmekte bu sahillere, Adalar'a...

English translation was kindly edited by Gündüz Vassaf:

Look, a seagull glides over the waves
As if waiting for you to return, perhaps yearning for your scent...
Look, a phaeton comes out of the pine forests...
These islands, the lush green land, were once yours and mine,
We grew up in this river of culture,
We dreamed of a future hand in hand...
Why were we not able to live in peace?
Alas, the seagulls cry in your absence...

Look, a boat in the mist barely visible on the horizon
Maybe bringing you back to the beaches, the islands...
Look, the clouds darken, the waves roar...
These islands, the lush green land, were once yours and mine,
I wait in the midst of azure seas,
Every night until dawn...
Return again, return to your essence as if never gone,
Believe, the islands were a mosaic, return to the river of culture...

"Adalar" was composed as an unstructured suite named "İstanbul Sweet" and was initially intended to be performed by a philarmonic orchestra. This version was presented as part of the "İstanbul, 2010 European Cultural Capital" project named "İstanbul, A River of Culture" supported by the "Bosphorus University, Peace Education Application & Research Center".

Special thanks to Nur Bekata Mardin, Gündüz Vassaf, Batur Pere and Ahmet Pesen for their sincere support. Additional thanks to Deniz Koç, Director of "The Museum of Princes' Islands", Murat Öztürk and Turgut Kuli for their extremely valuable contributions.
