  • Not sure exactly what to rate it, but I would put it pretty low too. Wasn't their best by any stretch of the imagination, but you have to start somewhere. The other 189 ranged from side-splitting to bleagh (I'm not that fond of Joe Besser, though he does have some funny moments).

  • @Sparrow9612

I like Joe Besser. In the context, he was a good fit. If Moe tried to find a talent that could ape Curly or Shemp, the results could have been a lot worse. Though most of the Besser films are pretty dull (or laughable for the wrong reasons), There are a couple that are very good..

  • No clue who Brennan is... sad.

  • @rbdean60

    :-(

  • You guys rate a 0,.5.

Just one example regarding supporting actors. This was Walter Brennan's film debut. Guys, he later on won 3 Best Supporting Actor Oscars.

And regarding your use of the word "unique." It cannot be modified. Something is either "unique" or not.

  • @joechristopher2

My only reaction to your point is the question of what did Mr. Brennan contribute to this film that makes it a standout Three Stooges film?

    Because that's what we're reviewing.

For me, this is just an obnoxious novelty film and the cast included doesn't shed any light on it.

About my use of the word "unique" - I don't follow you.

  • @zillis - True. I thought the one where the Stooge's late sister Birdie was reincarnated as a mare was good.

  • I agree. Women Haters wasn't their best work. I don't hate it. It just doesn't hold up well.

  • Larry's singing with Marjorie was terrific. Moe's almost. How could we not give Larry a standing ovation here?

  • This film blossomed my love powers at age 4 for Marjorie White. Check her out on Youtube. She was a stupendous talent in singing, comedy and dance. If she hadnt died so young in a car crash she'd be a big name.

  • This is how I sum up Woman Haters - I'm glad it exists, but I'm glad there are not 189 other carbon copies.

It's a fun novelty film, nothing more, nothing less. Still, I'll take standard Stooge mayhem over this, 189 times out of 190. The Columbia short department actually started out making "Musical Novelties" like this, and WOMAN HATERS is the only one that is not lost to my knowledge.

Anybody else ever notice Moe giving Curly a cue towards the musical number at the end of the short?

  • Slapstick: 2

    Dialogue: 3

    Plot: 2

    Supporting Cast: 2

    Moe: 1 Larry: 3 Curly: 2

    Pretty Girls: 1

    So I give this a 16.
