Roger Federer hitting forehand moonballs to Ivan Ljubicic in slow motion HD at the 2010 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, CA (Ljubicic went on to win the tournament). Federer and Ljubicic did this for several minutes during their practice session. It was a half-serious, half-joking exchanged.

Federer lost to Marcos Baghdatis (his first win over Federer) in the third round. This was Federer's first tournament since winning the Australian Open.

Click the link above to learn the 5 simple things Federer does when he hits a forehand -- and how you can copy his technique.

No; Federer uses his tournament match to prepare himself to play Rafa. It's almost arrogant, but how he incorporates more and more patterns into his game as the tournament goes on just betrays that. It's stunning how those two are out of the league...

Nadal is the only player who can defend against Roger's attacks when he's on and he is a rare if not the only one who can exploit Roger's high backhand efficiently. I hope they meet in final at Paris.

This movement does participate to power and spin production in his case, although it's not consciously executed. Some other players do not benefit from it simply because they don't establish the same forearm to hand position.

And, well, an other detail: a forward tilt in your racket allows you to attack the upper edge of the ball to the point you can add a solid 30% top spin if you do it. Notice Federer makes contact low in his string bed when he throws huge top spin.

It also happens to be the kind of detail even top pros would benefit to have. I'll sound obscure here, but as he swings his racket forward, his wrist extension and pronounce ulnar deviation will allow for him to better exploit his forearm muscles than other players through a Stretch-shortening-cycle (in short, his forearm muscle being extended, they'll move more quickly around impact). It takes Federer a lot less time to pronate his forearm on the forehand than most players.

Have you noticed that FYB coach is super imprecise and that he doesn't focus enough on details to make you hit a good shot? It's very nice with a beginner, but then you need to add small movements to allow big shots.

I used to like his videos a lot, but technique wise, he's little more than an amateur. Ever heard him talk of Federer's wrist position? Well, it's one of the things which allows him to hit 2600rpm and over 75mph on average with ease.

  • Anyone else notice this is the total opposite of what FYB teaches to do with the high ball EXCEPT in the cases where Federer hits a flat forehand.

His backswing always drops to waist height then proceeds to brush up and drive through the ball.

When he flattens it out, he doesn't drop his racket hand below chest height and just slaps or pushes through the ball with a slightly closed face.

  • I rather wanna hit a forehand like Adam Sieminski, it's superior!

  • @Jaewon12345 no shit

  • thumbs up if at 1:30 you saw the lady in pink hitting at the same time of roger! '-'

  • if these balls are moonballs your balls are mothballs.

  • wouldn't say a type like that is best for american football but Federer is like, perfectly proportioned for tennis -- he's the perfect non-contact sport athelete.
