If Love Now Reynyd (aka If Love Now Reigned). Believed to have been composed by Henry VIII.

The images are all of, or believed to depict, Queen Mary I of England at different stages during her life. Mary was Henry VIIIs daughter from his marriage to Katherine of Aragon, and was his eldest surviving child. Several of the images at the beginning depicting the young Mary come from various marriage treatises between Mary and French candidates. If anyone wants to know more about a specific image, feel free to message me.

The lyrics to the song (in early modern English as is sung in this version):

If love now reynyd as it hath bene
And war rewardit as it hath sene,

Nobyll men then wold suer enserch
All ways wherby thay myght it rech;

Butt envy reynyth with such dysdayne,
And causith lovers owtwardly to refrayne,

Which puttes them to more and more
Inwardly most grevous and sore;

The fault in whome I cannot sett;
But let them tell which love doth gett.

To lovers I put now suer this cace
Which of ther loves doth get them grace?

And unto them which doth it know
Better than do I, I think it so.

  • I wonder how big Henry's cock was

  • @localloadie How does one remember as a composer (without twinging) a self aggrandizing, self serving jerk who none dared gainsay? A man who had countless good people killed, who forcibly wrenched England away from its religious heritage, and who did these things and more, all in quest of a male heir, geared to his misogynist notions of dynasty? Henry VIII will be remembered alright, but his sweet tunes are and should be but a footnote in the legacy that he left.

  • Doctor Lecter love it :)

  • @localloadie But you know a lot of people doubt of Henry VIII credit for a lots of song that he claim to be his ??? Personally I believe he was a Luteist and composer althought there is a debate about it

    ..

  • So is her reconstruction of the language alright?

  • Another great video, I especially enjoyed seeing many images of Mary that I have not seen before, such as the treaties....

    I'm curious which is your favorite portrait of her? I think mine might be the Mor one, even if it's not very flattering it's so incredibly life-like and well done it looks like a photograph....I went crazy when I came upon it in the Prado in Madrid!

  • Well said.

  • Beautiful! Love the purity of the music from this era. Thanks littlemisssunnydale!

  • Even higher than the standard of living of the king. Perhaps I do not have golden beakers, but I have access to antibiotics, pain killers and could be in in few hours in Paris ... just to name a few benefits of our time which Henry VIII could even not dreamed of.
