Commentator - "Laing was now a celebrity in America and was one of the leaders of what was called the 'Anti-psychiatry movement'.
Psychiatry, Laing said, was a fake science used as a system of political control to shore up a violent collapsing society. Its categories of madness and sanity had no reality. Madness was simply a convenient label used to lock away those who wanted to break free."

"Hundreds of young psychiatrists came to Laing's talks and one of them was inspired and decided to find a way of testing whether what Laing said was true or not. Could psychiatrists in America distinguish between madness and sanity?"

"He was called David Rosenhan and he devised a dramatic experiment. He assembled 8 people, including himself, none of whom had ever had any psychiatric problems.

Each person was sent across the country to a specific mental hospital. At an agreed time, they all presented themselves at their hospital and told the psychiatrist on duty they were hearing a voice in their head that said the word "Thud". That was the only lie they should tell otherwise they were to behave and respond completely normally."

Question - "and then what happened?"

David Rosenhan - "They were all diagnosed as insane and admitted to the hospital."

Question - "All of them?"

David Rosenhan - "All of them."

Question - "And were any of them insane?"

David Rosenhan - "No. There was nobody who could have judged these people as insane. ... but I told friends, I told my family, I get out when I get out; that's all. Be there for a couple of days and then I get out. Nobody knew I would be there for 2 months!"

Commentator - "Once admitted, all 8 fake patients acted completely normally yet the hospitals refused to release them and diagnosed 7 as suffering from schizophrenia and one from bipolar disorder. They were all given powerful psychotropic drugs.

They found there was nothing they could do to convince the doctors they were sane and it quickly became clear that the only way out would be to agree that they were insane and then pretend to be getting better.

David Rosenhan - "The only way out was to point out that they're correct. They said I was insane, I am insane, but I am getting better. That was an affirmation of their view of me."

Commentator - "When Rosenhan finally got out and reported the experiment, there was an uproar. He was accused of trickery and deceit and one major hospital challenged him to send some more fakes to him, guaranteeing that they would spot them this time.

Rosenhan agreed and after a month, the hospital proudly announced that they had discovered 41 fakes. Rosenhan then revealed that he had sent no-one to the hospital.

The effect of The Thud Experiment was a disaster for American psychiatry. It destroyed the idea that they were a privileged elite with specialist knowledge.

But those in charge realised that psychiatry could not just give up. Another way had to be found of understanding and managing people's inner feelings in modern society."

@britishflagbearer ..I admit that bad practice can and has happened, the same with any specialty, but you are clearly overestimating the magnitude of such problems and you are suggesting dropping a form of treatment that has been demonstrated to help thousands upon thousands of vulnerable people because of a few examples where psychiatrists, for whatever reason, have got it wrong!! If we did this for every specialty western medicine would come to a very sudden end!!!!

@drpiddleton It is you who has got it wrong by accepting that psychiatrists with the courts should be empowered to impose their actions upon the unwilling.

Psychiatric practice has no more to do with civilised western medicine than has Ugandan witch doctors sacrificing children to bring luck to a commercial venture, as exposed recently on the BBC. It is to do with western abuse of power.

The Ugandan witch doctors abuse & violate children and you do the same and to adults. You are worse.

Enough with the scientology nonsense. everyone knows scientology is weird but that does not mean they are wrong on psychiatry. why don't you people look into the history of psychiatry. one fuck up after another. Insulin coma therapy, ECT, lobotomy. Now they lobotomize people with SSRI'S, Xanax, and Seroquel. They were also very close to the eugenics movement helping legitimize it with the biological theory of mental illness. These people are psychotic.

@7ty714 Does your =I symbol mean "not equivalent"? Because I know they aren't equivalent, but they share one extremely important thing...that's psychology. You can't tell me that they are two totally different professions. They have both stemmed from the same philosophers. Either way, the study in question in this video was David Rosenhan's. An American Psychologist who was questioning the validity of psychiatric diagnosis. Psychology is the basis of psychiatry don't tell me you deny that?

@Licmycat Religion is not provable anyway, so don't use it as evidence. Psychiatry contains very little neurological evidence to support all their claims. They tell us that people have all these disorders, when the "disorders" are really just differences in human nature and personality. No one can make generalizations about something as diverse as human nature.

Hmm....sounds like the plan of repubs to destroy help for the mentally ill. Psychiatry is a tool like any other can be used for good or bad. It just doesn't exist to those who are not human or have any human feelings as their conscience is suppressed or dead. And it has always been known that mental illness is induced by demons who possess people. Jesus healed and cleansed some of those mentally ill. And they became normal and lived. You rarely see any being exorcised today, do u?

@tien714 For example with regard to this video, if the drug companies who manufacture psychiatric drugs hate this video and others like it, they might complain to YouTube and get such videos taken down.

Unless we who question psychiatry are organised independently we are vulnerable to being disorganised by YouTube pulling the plug for whatever reason.

This applies too for many other political issue where enemies may seek to deny our freedom to organise against their narrow interests.
