Russell Gilbrook of Uriah Heep at Musikmesse 2009

At this year's Frankfurt Musikmesse, Paiste decided to test their "Sound Booth" to the max with a stunning, hard hitting performance by Russell Gilbrook . This clinic had the everything and it was like being in the enclosure at a cage fight and the door had been locked. (No-one asked for the key).

Russell filled the room with energy from beginning to end challenging peoples conceptions of rudiments, fills, dynamics whilst always pushing himself and the drum kit to produce the best.

Rudiments? Who needs rudiments when you can learn everything by using singles, doubles + dynamics. Russell was particularly keen to emphasize the 2nd note of the double. "It needs to be as clean and loud as the 1st note". We were treated to a Masterclass in all areas of the double stroke roll and I have to admit I have never seen a drummer player doubles so well in a heavy rock/metal performance. It was very inspiring to hear doubles played as loud as singles.

Russell is the new drummer for Uriah Heep and told us all about the audition which included playing along to a shuffle. Do you like your shuffle with a ghost note? Maybe you would prefer two ghost notes but you are now in the cage with Russell so you shall have three ghost notes. Then it's straight into the track with the three ghost notes really helping the song to groove. We were then treated to many other songs including more Uriah Heep and Russell's fantastic version of Queens Of The Stone Age "No One Knows" with Russell's fills.

russell is a great guy and a fantastic drummer/teacher. i was taught by him at college...he can teach and play any style of music, what he's doing here is right for the job - which happens to be Uriah Heap so i think he's awesome.

I was speaking to Russ last night at a gig for ages what a really nice geeza he is!

He has just spent $10k on an SJC paint splatt effect kit and I can't wait to see it.
