Awesome 1960's classic Canadian garage band song. The Paupers were one of the more predominant Toronto groups in the mid 60's to combine the day's carefree attitude with experimental studio sounds.
I have their two LPs This is the first time I've heard this track. The first time I took acid in '68 they were playing in Belleville, Ont. Original bassist Denny Gerrard was replaced by Brad Campbell, who later Joined Janis Joplin's Full Tilt Boogie.
i saw them play in Toronto. Denny's drug habit was so bad he left the group. Then Prokop, who was doing tons of session work left to form Lighthouse. Members came and went and they never captured their initial momentum. Mitchell went on to become a producer, most notably of Linda Ronstadt and they were romantically involved for quite some time.
Bill Misener or Skip Prokop is singing on this track. They were originally The Spats and changed their name to The Paupers. When Misener left, Adam Mitchell joined the group. Mitchell, from Scotland, had been playing with a folk group, Common Folk. At different times they open for David Clayton Thomas and The Shays, The Lovin' Spoonful, Jimi Hendrix and Jefferson Airplane. They played with Cream and MC5.
The Paupers played upstairs from Boris's on Ave. Rd. The Myna Bird was on Yorkville upstairs from the Patio. Remember the dancing girl in the cage. Paupers played at The Gaslight
