Well here it is the horrifying Flip that #28 Davey Allison takes down the short chute.
Allison clearly had the best car leading over 110 laps but a bad pit stop put him a bit farther back into the pack, as he was trying to make his was back through he makes contact with #17 Darrell Waltrip and the rest as they say is history.

  • Jesus, Davey took a beating in '92. Shows he was as tough as they come. This era was Nascar at its very best.

  • What happened on Saturday Night Thunder?

  • @TheNovaMan Back then, racers were real men.

  • @kingofrunescapepking No, he was hurt rather badly. His skull was fractured, which resulted in his head swelling significantly, and he had to have eight screws put into his right arm. Amazingly, he started the next race (Talladega), steering with his left arm and shifting with his right, which was velcro'd to the shifter. He was replaced by Bobby Hillin, Jr. after the first few laps during a caution for a short rain shower.

  • davey supposed not block darrell because darrell"s car is faster than davey. davey saw mirror his car coming... davey should know better.... i were darrell i would same thing to davey!

  • @dsmcclellan Hardly, Bill Elliott won as many races in 1992 as Davey did. Mark Martin should have won the 1990 championship instead of Earnhardt if not for that bad call taking away points from Martin at the Richmond spring event that year. Ernie Irvan would have beaten Earnhardt for the 1994 Cup had he not crashed in practice for the August MIS event. Plus Alan Kulwicki won the 1992 Cup and might have won more if not for the fatal airplane crash in 1992.

  • Davy Allison was not turned by Waltrip he tryied to tuck in comming into the turn didnt think waltrip was as close as he was cliped the rear panel just enough to get allison out of shape. when the rear of the came around it caused aerolift, became airborn (still a problem to this day on speedways) allison was along for the ride from then on

  • Darrell just flat turned him - Waltrip denies it to this day but the reality is he wanted Davey to wreck, he just didn't expect him to flip.

  • iirc, allison only suffered a broken wrist in this crash, is that correct?

  • with DW and Dale Sr racing back then, it was no wonder that half the field had a DNF every race

  • doomgaze76 i agree, kulwicki, earnhardt, allison, and elliot
